NEW MATERIAL:An m-hydroxybenzoic acid ester derivative of the formula (R is phenethyl or 2-phenoxyethyl). EXAMPLE:Phenethyl m-hydroxybenzoate. USE:Useful as an injurious insect repellent and capable of exhibiting repellent action on sanitary injurious insects, e.g. cockroaches and white ants. PREPARATION:m-Hydroxybenzoic acid is reacted with phenethyl alcohol or 2- phenoxyethyl alcohol in the presense of an acid catalyst, e.g. sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid, if desired in a solvent, e.g. benzene or toluene, under heating or the m-hydroxybenzoic acid is reacted with a phenethyl halide in a suitable solvent in the presence of an alkali under heating to afford the aimed compound of the formula.
