PURPOSE:To read out an original efficiently without paying attention to an original placed position by storing position information and picture information, which denote positions of respective elements, in a memory device and by executing the prescribed address conversion operation for each address in the memory device. CONSTITUTION:Picture information and position information from an original reader 7 are stored in a memory device 9 having the same capacity as the total of elements obtained by a reading scan. An address converter 10 accesses in sequence to the memory device 9 so as to read in picture information, and converts picture information, which corresponds to originals placed in an optional position of a platen, into the picture information obtained when the originals are placed in the prescribed position of the platen. The conversion of the informatio is excuted as follows: After line and column addresses of elements, where a line address becomes minimum out of picture information taking 0 or 1, and those of elements, where a column address becomes maximum, have been detected, conversion is carried out.
