PURPOSE:To obtain the titled steel having high strength, high toughness, superior resistance to temper softening and satisfactory suitability to working to the shape of an edged tool by restricting the composition of a steel contg. C, Si, Mn, Cr and Al. CONSTITUTION:This steel for a cutting tool consists of, by weight, 0.9-1.5% C, 0.8-1.5% Si, <=0.6% Mn, 0.3-1.5% Cr, <=0.05% Al and the balance Fe. The steel has high strength, high toughness and superior resistance to softening during the generation of much heat due to the frictional resistance in use, so a saw such as a metallic band saw, hack saw or an edged tool such as a cutter blade can be obtd. at a low cost.
