PURPOSE:To provide a dispersant for a coal/water slurry contg. a specified anionic surfactant and poly(meth)acrylic acid or a water-soluble alkali metal salt thereof and capable of dispersing dust coal in a high concn. and in a stabilized condition. CONSTITUTION:The dispersant is prepd. by blending (a) 40-98wt% anionic surfactant consisting of at least one of naphthalenesulfonic acid/formaldehyde condensate having an average degree of condensation of 1.2-10 and alkali metal and ammonium salts thereof with (b) 60-2wt% at least one of poly(meth)acrylic acid having an M.W. of 1,000-10,000 and water-soluble alkali metal salt thereof. The dispersant is added to a coal/water slurry in such an amt. that the effective ingredient may account for 0.01-5wt% of the slurry.
