The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for treating flushing water to eliminate environmentally harmful metal ions and/or gaseous emissions. The invention consists in that a by-pass is present in the flushing circulation, for example of an etching unit, from which part-quantities of the circulating flushing agent are passed directly through ion exchanger resins. It is essential that the by-pass line, in which the ion exchanger is located, branches off from the pressure line of a circulation pump, which leads to spray jets fed by the flushing liquid, and opens downstream of the ion exchanger into the flushing medium vessel through the outlet. According to the invention it is provided that the feed of the water softener is arranged underneath the overflow of the intermediate vessel (syphon) in such a manner that the minimal flow through the ion exchanger is ensured as a result of the height difference. <IMAGE>
