PURPOSE:To shorten the recognizing time of a pattern recognizing device without making collation in parallel, by determining the category of patterns to be recognized which are urgent recognizing objects by means of the division of feature quantity extent. CONSTITUTION:A reading section 11 reads sample patterns at every category. The sample patterns are displayed in a display section 12 and an operator inputs categrory names through a category name inputting section 13. A division determining section 15 determines the extent of a feature quantity which is taken by a pattern to be recognized from the output of a feature extracting section 14 at every category. A selection circuit 34 selects a binary coded data string corresponding to the feature quantity extent division obtained from the pattern to be recognized from a reconizing dictionary 2. The AND circuit 42 of a collating section 4 gets AND of the content of a register 41 and the content of another register 43 at every column and performs this operation to all features. After performing this operation to all features, a candidate category to the pattern to be recognized is obtained.
