A device for securing a climber on the mountain by means of, in each case, one of two rope sections leading to a chest strap, the outer ends of which rope sections are to be connected, alternately and releasably, to belay points on the mountain, characterised in that the two rope sections are elements of a continuous rope which is passed through a rope brake which is to be attached to the chest strap and is equally effective in both running directions of the rope.
