A burglar alarm system is described with an electrically powered area monitoring device, disposed in a stationary manner, with a sensor to monitor the heat pattern and a separately disposed receiving device (13) which has at least one alarm transmitter (19). To ensure that the alarm system will continue to indicate even when damaged, it is proposed according to the invention that the receiving device (13) be designed as a portable handset having an antenna (23), a receiver (22) and an electronic decoding system (17), and that the area monitoring device have an electronic coding system with a transmitter and an antenna and an electronic control system which is connected to the sensor in such a way that, once an alarm signal has been activated and identified, intermittent switching pulses are generated and continually transmitted. <IMAGE>
