Fire-retarding wall elements have at their abutting end edges a groove into which a connecting profile, which is preferably designed as a rectangular tube, can be inserted. The hollow cross-section of the connecting profile is filled with a heat-resistant insulating material in order to reduce the heat transmission at the joint between two wall elements. For installation purposes, the connecting profile can be pushed completely into a hollow space of at least one wall element. Further measures serve for reducing the heat transmission at this hollow space.
