The invention proposes a method for the production of a cast connecting rod, the shank of which has a cross-sectional contour with the shape essentially of an "l" section. Cooling elements, e.g. cooling surfaces (5, 4), which can be removed after solidification has taken place, are cast on between the two lateral limbs (7) which connect the two bearing bosses (2, 3) to one another. The provision of cooling elements provides the advantage of controlled cooling. Since the cooling walls solidify first, they serve as a cooling element both for the bearing bosses and for the limbs. For reasons of strength, the small end boss is provided with an oval outer contour. The method proposed brings with it not only advantages in terms of casting but also a considerable saving in weight and, above all, a reduction in costs. <IMAGE>
