The process for coating substrates with metals comprises the following process steps: a) binding the metals to be deposited as nuclei in one or more organometallic sandwich compounds, b) production of a liquid or pasty preparation containing said organometallic sandwich compounds, c) application of the preparation produced in this way to a substrate to be coated, d) liberation of the metals bound as nuclei in the organometallic sandwich compounds by supplying energy to the preparation applied to the substrate, e) removal of the residue of the preparation from the substrate.
