Steel panels are coated by dipping in a composition comprising an epoxy resin, a curing agent for the epoxy resin, an active thixotropy inducing silica containing filler for said resin and from 0,06 to 6 parts by weight of polyalkylene glycol per 100 parts by weight of epoxy resin, the coatings being cured by the application of heat. Examples describe the coating of steel panels with compositions comprising an epoxy resin, a boron-fluoride-monoethylamine complex, silica, fused glass, polyethylene glycol and optionally lithium aluminium silicate and glycerine.ALSO:A coating composition comprises an epoxy resin, a curing agent for the epoxy resin, an active thixotropy inducing silica containing filler for said resin and from 0,06 to 6 parts by weight of polyalkylene glycol per 100 parts by weight of epoxy resin. Specified epoxy resins are those derived from epichlorohydrin and hydroquinone, resorcinol, glycerol and bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2:2-propane and epoxidized olefinic material. Specified curing agents are pyromellitic dianhydride, dicyandiamide and complexes of boron trifluoride with methyl-amine, ethylamine, propylamine, butylamine, aniline, diethyl aniline, toluidine, chloroaniline, nitroaniline and piperidine. Specified fillers which may be admixed with non-thixotropic fillers are fumed, finely divided silica, silica aerogel, finely divided precipitated silica and diatomaceous earth. Specified polyalkylene glycols are polyethylene, polypropylene and polybutylene glycol. Examples are given. |
