Abrading tool with discontinuous diamond pattern - obtd. by electro-nickel bonding diamond particles to surface having interspersed metal and resist zones

An abrasive tool with a discontinuous diamond pattern on the surface is made by electrochemically depositing a metal on a surface of a substrate having interspersed metal zones and non-conductive resist zones. Diamond particles are then non-selectively distributed over the surface, and Ni is electrodeposited on the horizontal surface to bond the diamonds to the metal zones. The substrate is then titled to remove the diamonds which are not bonded to the resist zones and further Ni is electrodeposited to bond the diamond particles. Used for abrading discs for grinding and polishing opthalmic lenses. The discontinuous diamond pattern economises on diamond and is easily produced.
