Apparatus for shaping to toroidal form a pre-formed flat-band carcass 100 comprises relatively axially movable end-heads 101, 103, each including an inflatable annulus 147 for urging radially outwardly into engagement with a tyre bead an annular series of segments 135 overlain by an elastomeric sealing strip 149, means being provided for introducing pressurized gas into the space formed by the end-heads and the carcass. Each series of segments is constrained radially inwardly by two garter springs 141. The carcass may be expanded into contact with a tread and breaker held by a transfer ring (5), (Fig. 1, not shown), or a tread and breaker may be manually applied after carcass expansion.
