PURPOSE:Carbon fibers, obtained by coating carbon fibers as a core material with a ceramic layer of specific shape under specific conditions, having a high strength at high temperatures and prevented reaction with metal, and suitable for fiber-reinforced metal, etc. CONSTITUTION:Ceramic coated carbon fibers, obtained by coating carbon fibers with ceramic by CVD, reaction vapor deposition methods, etc., and having closely aggregated fine crystal grains having <=0.1mu grain diameter without gaps on observation with a scanning type electron microscope and the smooth surface layer without unevenness having >=1mu height as surface undulations. The ceramic layer is usually formed from a crystal system of SiC, Si3N4, TiC, ZrC, TaC, WC or NbC.
