PURPOSE:To make an original picture coincident with a maximum effective reading width of a picture reading sensor regardless of the size of an original by providing a means detecting the width of the original and setting the magnification of a magnifying means in response to the result of detection. CONSTITUTION:A transmission original is set onto a slider section 1 while matching the width (a) at reading the transmission original, and a selective input of automatic magnification operation is performed via a changeover switch 5, the width (a) of the transmission original is detected by a controller section 4 via a sensor 2 and an A/D converting section 3, and the controller section 4 sets the zoom ratio of a zoom lens 6 so as to make the picture width of the transmission original formed on an original read sensor 7 coincident with a maximum effective reading width (b) by using the drive control of a motor 8 and then the read of picture is started.
