PURPOSE:To obtain life similar to that of a battery with glass by impregnating concentrated sulfuric acid on the surface of a cathode plate before formation and drying it. CONSTITUTION:A cathode plate 1 which is aged but not yet formed is put on a belt conveyor 2. Small holes are installed at the bottom of a reservoir 3 of sulfuric acid having a specific gravity of 1,200-1,500 (at 20 deg.C) and sulfuric acid is dropped so as to wet a pair of rollers 4. Speed of the belt conveyor 2 and rollers 4 are controlled so that the plate 1 passes between the rollers 4 within three seconds. The plate 1 is dried an a dense, active PbSO4 layer is formed on the surface of the plate 1. After applying formation treatment, the interior of the plates converts into uniform PbO2 but the surface is covered with an inactive PbSO4 layer. By this process, life of the battery becomes similar to that of a battery with glass. |
