Sodium carboxymethylcellulose is disclosed wherein the average degree of substitution ( &upbar& D) of carboxymethyl groups per anhydroglucose unit is in the range of 0.4 to 1.6, the number-average degree of polymerization is in the range of 100 to 1,500, and the mobility distribution ( DELTA U) as measured by electrophoresis is represented by the following formula: DELTA Ux105<(-3.0 log &upbar& D+3.20)x105 cm2/secxV.
