PURPOSE:To reduce the capacity of a dictionary memory, by deleting the background part of patterns in a dictionary and by using the size of a dictionary area, position and size of a pattern part, and pattern data of the pattern part only. CONSTITUTION:At the time of producing a dictionary pattern, the image of a dictionary sample is picked up and processed. The processed data are stored in a frame memory 4 and supplied to a data compressing circuit 8. At the data compressing circuit 8, the background part of the dictionary pattern is deleted and only the pattern part is remained. In addition to the above, numerical data indicating the size of dictionary, size of pattern, and position of pattern are stored in a dictionary memory 26 together with the pattern data. Since almost all part of the background of the dictionary pattern is delected, the total quantity of the dictionary data is compressed, even though the numerical data are added. When the data of a pattern 1 to be recognized are stored in the frame memory 4, recognition process between each dictionary pattern and the data of the frame memory 4 is performed by a pattern matching circuit 25.
