NEW MATERIAL:The 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzene derivative of formula I (R is group of formula II; R<1> is alkyl). EXAMPLE:1,3,5-Benzenetricarboxylic acid tri(p-n-octyloxyphenyl) ester. USE:Useful as a liquid crystal substance. It has a monotropic tansition point at about <=30% from the liquid crystal phase to the isotropic liquid, and can be used as a liquid crystal display, etc. by mixing other known liquid crystal or dye. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl chloride with a p-alkoxyphenol of formula III in an inert solvent such as dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, etc. in the presence of a basic compound such as sodium acetate, etc. at 0-200 deg.C.
