PURPOSE:To shorten the time required for recognizing a dictionary pattern, by setting the background part of patterns other than those where dictionary patterns are prepared under a fat condition as a recognition suspending area and suspending the process when patterns to be recognized are superimposed upon another in the recognition suspending area. CONSTITUTION:At the time of producing a dictionary pattern, the image of the dictionary pattern is picked up and processed. The processed image is stored in a frame memory 4 and stored in a dictionary memory 16 as a dictionary pattern memory after passing through a suspending area producing circuit 8. When data of a pattern 1 to be recognized are stored in the frame memory 4, pattern matching process of both patterns is performed by a pattern matching circuit 15 and, when the pattern part of the pattern 1 to be recognized is superimposed upon another in the suspending area in the dictionary pattern, it is detected by means of a suspension detecting circuit 9. The output of the suspension detecting circuit 9 is given to a control system 17 and the recognizing process between the next dictionary pattern and the pattern to be recognized is started by suspending the recognizing process.
