PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as a dispersing agent, etc. in high quality without any residual unreacted maleic acid anhydride nor causing trouble in purification, by subjecting an olefin and maleic acid anhydride to the thermal addition reaction, and adding further a peroxide to the reaction system to react radically the unreacted above-mentioned raw material. CONSTITUTION:An olefin and maleic acid anhydride at preferably 1:0.5-1:2 charging molar ratio between the olefin and the maleic acid anhydride are subjected to the thermal addition reaction within 170-260 deg.C, preferably 190- 230 deg.C range. A peroxide is then added to the reaction system, and the reaction is carried out usually within 100-260 deg.C, preferably 130-200 deg.C ramge to give te titled compound used advantageously as a resin modifier, dispersing agent, rust preventive agent, etc. The peroxide to be added to the above-mentioned reaction system may be ordinary radical generators, e.g. ditertiary butyl peroxide, etc. in 0.001-0.1mol% based on the olefin in charging. The olefin is preferably 8-2,000C compounds having ethylenically unsaturated double bonds in the molecule.
