PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate of agricultural chemicals and pharmaceuticals, etc., economically, in high yield, by contacting and reacting cumyl isocyanate with a specific amount of an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid in a non-aqeous solvent at a temperature within a specific range. CONSTITUTION:The objective cumylamine is produced by dissolving cumyl isocyanate in a non-aqueous solvent (e.g. ether), and contacting and reacting the solution with an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid at <=35 deg.C. The amount of the hydrochloric acid is >=5mol per 1mol of cumyl isocyanate. The synthesis of an amine by the hydrolysis of an isocyanate is accompanied by the side reaction comprising the production of a urea derivative by the reaction of the produced amine with the isocyanate. The produced amine can be converted to hydrochloride rapidly by contacting the product with an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid under the above condition, and the salt is transferred from the orgaic solvent phase containing the cumyl isocyanate to the aqueous phase to suppress the undesirable side reaction.
