PURPOSE:To prevent an ink ribbon from slackening and prevent defective printing or the like from occurring, with a simple construction, by a method wherein after operating a thermal head of a thermal transfer printer for final printing, the head is made to overrun in the printing direction without operating heating elements for heating. CONSTITUTION:A carriage 5 is moved in the printing direction by driving a guide shaft 6, and simultaneously, a predetermined printing operation is performed by a thermal head 2. When the carriage 5 is moved from a printing region B into a non-printing region C, the printing operation of the head 2 is stopped by a printing-controlling circuit, and an ink ribbon 4 is taken up. At this time, an ink on the ink ribbon 4 is not melted, so that the ribbon 4 is easily released from a printing paper 7, and it is not needlessly drawn out from a cassette 3. Thereafter, the head 2 is slightly moved backward at the end of the non-printing region C, and the carriage 5 is returned. The used ribbon 4 is not drawn out even when the carriage 5 is moved forward at the time of starting the next printing. |
