PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound having low content of m-isomer, economically, by the high-temperature vapor-phase dehydrogenation of p-tert-butylethylbenzene in the presence of steam, using an iron oxide-alkali metal catalyst under a specific condition. CONSTITUTION:p-tert-Butylstyrene having low content of m-isomer and useful as a raw material of polymer having high heat resistance and flame retardance can be produced in extremely high selectivity and yield, in high purity, by the high-temperature dehydrogenation of p-tert-butylethylbenzene in vapor-phase in the presence of steam, using a catalyst containing iron oxide and an alkali metal compound (except for sodium compound) keeping the catalyst temperature at <580 deg.C, preferably <570 deg.C, a liquid space velocity of the objective compound to 0.02-0.12, especially 0.04-0.1, and the weight ratio of steam to the raw material to 1.5-3.5, especially 2-3. |
