PURPOSE:To attain a high-speed searching action up to an n-fold level by changing the linear speeds of a rotary magnetic head as well as the tape speed in a high-speed searching mode and without changing these speeds in a normal reproduction mode. CONSTITUTION:In a normal reproduction mode a control signal shaped by a waveform shaping circuit 41 is supplied to a trapezoidal wave converting circuit 42. A tape 1 is driven at a speed VT and a magnetic head 3 travels on the tape 1 at a linear speed VD to reproduce the recorded data. In a high-speed search mode a contact is switched and the voltage of a voltage dividing circuit 35 which is delivered through an amplifying circuit 37 is set at a high level. A motor 14 drives the tape 1 at a speed nVT. A pulse of KAHz is supplied to a reference pulse generator 17 from a trapezoidal wave converting circuit 21. A rotary drum 2 is rotated at an angular speed Ktheta with the sum of the output of a sample and hold circuit 24 and the output voltage of a voltage dividing circuit 27. Thus the motor 14 can drive the tape 1 at the speed nVT.
