Apparatus for detecting the appearance of cracks in structural elements and mechanical components. The apparatus comprises one or more optical fibres 12 which can transmit the light emitted by one or more self-contained light sources 13 to a photosensitive detector 14 such as a photoelectric cell. Each optical fibre is fixed or embedded in the element or component. Any crack propagating through a zone fitted with an optical fibre will cause the optical fibre to break so that the light will no longer be transmitted to the photodetector which will actuate an alarm signal 16. Application in particular to aeronautics (helicopter blades), oil platforms, drilling installations, etc. <IMAGE>
