PURPOSE:To decontaminate surely and simply a metallic article having a film of a contaminant such as metallic oxide without damaging the uncontaminated part by electrolyzing the article as a cathode in an alkali electrolytic soln. CONSTITUTION:A metallic article of carbon steel, stainless steel or the like having a film of a contaminant such as rust or metallic oxide is decontaminated by electrolysis as a cathode in an alkali electrolytic soln. As aqueous soln. of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium silicate or the like is used as the electrolytic soln., and the concn. of the compound is adjusted to about 5-150g per 1l electrolytic soln. The electrolysis is carried out at about 10-100A/dm<2> current density and ordinary temp. for about 10min-2hr.
