Handling apparatus intended for hoisting loads such as ladders 1 onto the roof of a vehicle, comprising a tube 3 fixed to the roof 4 of the vehicle parallel to the longitudinal axis of the latter, it being possible for two straps 5 to be wound or unwound around the tube 3 when the latter is driven rotationally by a control rod 13, and two supports 6 for receiving a load 1 such as a ladder, each fixed to a strap 5, the lower ends of which are connected by a rigid tie; the straps 5 are supported by transverse slideways 24 fixed to the roof 4 by return pulleys 26, means for retaining 28 and for locking 29 the supports 6 and the ladder 1 on the roof being provided. This apparatus may be used by a single person with ease and without requiring great physical effort. <IMAGE>
