The hydrodynamic torque converter has a bridging clutch whose actuating piston is moved against spring action into the disengaged position by pressure in the torus formed between pump, turbine and guide wheels. Pressure is supplied by a pump feed passage and selector valve with pressure-relief valve connected by feed and discharge passage to the torus. When pressure in the torus (1) is released, the piston (12) is thrust solely by spring action into the engaged position. The space on the side of the piston furthest from the torus is connected to that on the side towards the torus by a drilling (12a), and by a leak-off passage to the collector vessel. The size of the drilling is sufficiently small to allow pressure build-up at minimum speed of the pump wheel (2) sufficient to move the piston into the release position. The cross-section of the leak-off passage (22) is appreciably larger. The selector valve is spring-loaded into a position in which the pump feed passage, also the valve feed and discharge passages, are connected to the collector vessel, bypassing the relief of valve.
