Process for identifying the author of an attack, consisting in a first stage in spraying the attacker with a product coloured by the addition of a volatile reactant, the colour disappearing after the evaporation of the said reactant and, in a second stage, in spraying the volatile reactant again over the suspects, the colouring reappearing if the suspect(s) have previously received a spray of the said coloured product. Means for implementing the process, characterised in that the marking product is a solution of phenolphthalein and in that the reactant is a volatile base such as aqueous ammonia.
