The present invention relates to a heating apparatus of the inverted combustion type for open hearths. The heating apparatus according to the invention comprises a hearth under which is placed a combustion chamber 2 receiving at least one heat exchanger 3 consisting of a box and communicating with at least one gas discharge duct and is essentially characterised in that the heat exchanger 3 is fastened against the side walls 6 of the combustion chamber 2 in order to compel the entire heat flux originating from the hearth to by-pass the exchanger 3 by its front end. <IMAGE>
