PURPOSE:To prevent unnecessary shift-down by prohibiting selection of the top speed stage only when the increment of vehicle speed is above a predetermined value, with a throttle valve fully closed. CONSTITUTION:When a throttle sensor detects the fully closed condition of a throttle valve and a vehicle speed increment discriminating means discriminates the vehicle speed increment above a predetermined value, a top speed stage prohibiting means is actuated to control a solenoid valve so that a top speed stage may not be selected by an automatic speed change device. If the throttle valve is open, increment of vehicle speed above the predetermined value will not cause prohibition of a top speed stage selection. Thus, on accelerating operation by a driver during a constant speed running, this system is effective to eliminate disadvantageous automatic shift-down from the top speed stage to a lower speed stage.
