Method for the ignition of soot burn-off filters and diesel engine with soot burn-off filter

A diesel engine with soot burn-off filter and a method for the ignition of soot burn-off filters in the exhaust line of diesel engines by means of hot exhaust gases is described, which is based on the fact that for an essentially constant engine speed the exhaust gas temperature is increased by increasing the engine load. The engine load is increased by switching on additional devices normally already present in the motor vehicle, such as retarder, engine brakes or vehicle brakes. The method ensures reliable filter cleaning at all times, even in the case of predominantly partial-load operation.
