PURPOSE:To improve productivity of arginine by a bacterium, by cultivating the bacterium to produce arginine under irradiation of light rays in a specific wavelength range. CONSTITUTION:In preparing arginine by cultivating a bacterium belonging to the genus Microbacterium, Corynebacterium, etc. capable of producing arginine, the cultivation is carried out by adding a covering material to transmit light rays with at least 280nm or in a wavelength range longer than it to the culture system after the logarithmic growth phase of the bacterium, irradiating it with light rays in 280-800nm wavelength range in irradiation intensity of 100,000-1muW/ cm<2>.
