PURPOSE:To obtain intermediate picture adjustment processing method which can select several kinds of graduation expression with different density characteristics by providing groups of matrix patterns with different density characteristics and by specifying the group in accordance with the prescribed density characteristics. CONSTITUTION:An intermediate adjustment data processor 100 receives group specification data, graduation data and magnification specification data from a host 200 such as a computer and a facsimile device, and develops picture information on a page memory or buffer memory 20 by a bit (dot) distribution. A central processing unit 10 of the intermediate adjustment data processor 100 writes a matrix pattern stored in an ROM in a RAM, and rewrites it so as to store in the RAM when a matrix pattern at a graduation level specified in accordance with the prescribed density characteristics is read out from the RAM. After all matrix patterns have been stored in the RAM, the matrix pattern is specified by the group specification data and the graduation data given from the host 200, and read out from the RAM.
