The invention relates to a method for the black mordanting of wooden objects, in which these objects are treated with a tannin-containing aqueous mordant in the presence of iron compounds, or, in succession with a first and a second aqueous mordant. The sole, or the first, mordant contains 20-100 g/l of logwood extract and/or vegetable hydrolysable tannins, the sole, or the second, mordant furthermore contains a solution containing 0.07-0.36 mol/l iron(II) salt and, based on the iron(II) content, 0.8-1.2 equivalents of ammonium ions and/or an amount of non-oxidising volatile acid which suffices for establishing a pH between 1 and 5. The mordant can be provided in the form of a concentrate.
