Process for purifying crude aluminum chloride such as that obtained by carbo-chlorination of ores. In the present invention, if the crude aluminum chloride (14) does not already contain sulfur, then sulfur or an equivalent sulfur-containing compound (16) is blended with the crude aluminum chloride. Elemental aluminum powder or an equivalent aluminum-containing compound in the solid state (18) is also blended with the crude aluminum chloride. The blend (12) is kept at 180<o>C and one atmosphere pressure and is fed into a screw-type sublimer (22). Substantially pure aluminum chloride is sublimed in the presence of nitrogen gas and constant agitation. The sublimed aluminum chloride is passed through a bed of aluminum chloride granules (28) at 250<o>C to remove traces of sulphur therefrom. The purified aluminum chloride may optionally be further purified in a rectification column before it is condensed and recovered. |
