PURPOSE:To obtain hydrated manganese oxide useful as an oxidizing agent which is represented by a specific molecular formula and which has a remarkably strained crystalline structure and a large specific surface area. CONSTITUTION:Hydrated manganese oxide shown by the formula I [(x is a ratio of an oxygen atom to an Mn atom, (a) and (b) are a molecular ratio of hydroxyl group and bound water for the molecule shown by the formula II, x is 1.55- 1.63 and the value shown by (a) in the formula III is 0.45-0.05] and showing an X-ray diffraction pattern shown by the chart is provided. The compound shown by the formula I is a novel compound and for example, it can be manufactured by adding more amounts of ammonia than the reactive equivalent with manganese sulphate to the aq. soln. of the manganese sulphate and by blowing air or oxygen having >=1atm partial pressure of oxygen therein. To obtain the aimed compound from the slurry of the reacted mixture obtained by said method, the slurry is filtered and the filter cake is washed with water to remove the ammonia and ammonium sulphate.
