PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer providing a flocculating agent having high performance, having high molecular weight, and improved water solubility, by polymerizing an aqueous solution of an acrylamide-containing monomer by the use of a specific polymerization catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution of an acrylamide-containing monomer is polymerized by the use of a compound (preferably benzoin) shown by the formula (R<1> and R<2> are phenyl which is replaced with lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, etc. as a polymerization catalyst, to the desired polymer. The concentration of the monomer solution is usually 10-60wt%. A content of acrylamide is preferably >=50mol, and an amount of the polymerization catalyst used is 10-500ppm based on the monomer.
