PURPOSE:To retard by-production of CO2 and to obtain H2 and CO with high rate of conversion by cracking methanol at a specified temp. in the presence of catalyst consisting primarily of Cu, Cr, and Ba having high activity and high heat resistance. CONSTITUTION:Precipitant (e.g. aq. ammonia) is added to aq. soln. contg. a specified proportion of Cu salt [e.g. Cu(NO3)2], Cr salt (e.g. ammonium chromate), and Ba salt [e.g. Ba(NO3)2], and formed precipitate is filtered, washed, dried, calcined, crushed, and the particle size is adjusted to prepare catalyst consisting primarily of 5-60wt% Cu, 1-50wt% Cr, and 1-15wt% Ba. Then, methanol is cracked catalytically at 150-500 deg.C in the presence of the obtd. catalyst and target synthetic gas comprising H2 and CO is obtd.
