NEW MATERIAL:A methylaminopyridine derivative expressed by formula I (CH3 is substituted at the 3- or 4-position). EXAMPLE:2,4-Dimethyl-6-methylaminopyridine. USE:An intermediate for compounds useful as medicines and agricultural chemicals, etc. capable of producing specific carbamate derivatives, e.g. o-4-tert-butylphenyl N-(4,6-dimethyl-2-pyridyl)-N-methylthiocarbamate, useful as an active constituent of herbicides controlling weeds in paddy fields, e.g. barnyard grass, smallflower umbrella plant and monochoria, etc. PREPARATION:A halopyridine derivative expressed by formula II (X is Br or Cl) is reacted with an aqueous solution of methylamine in a molar amount of 2-10 times of that of the halopyridine derivative expressed by formula II at 100-200 deg.C for 1-24hr to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I .
