PURPOSE:To manufacture a modified alkali titanate having excellent heat resistance by heating the mixture of an alkali metallic compound that is decomposed to an oxide and gas under heating and TiO2 in the presence of a specified carbide under the nonoxidizing atomsphere. CONSTITUTION:An alkali metallic compound (e.g. Na2CO3) that is decomposed to an alkali metallic oxide and gas under heating and TiO2 are mixed so that the atomic ratio of Ti to an alkali metal is regulated to 1-10. Then, 5-40wt% carbide shown by the formula C(M)Z (M is an element excepting C selected among the groups III-, IV- and V- of the periodic table, (z) is an integer equivalent to the valency of M) is added to said mixture. After the mixture is heated and degassed threrefrom at the temperature more than the decompositon temperature of the alkali metal under the nonoxidizing atmosphere, it is heated at 900-1,300 deg.C for 3-6hr.
