The invention relates to a method and means for detecting leaks through the cladding of a nuclear fuel rod. Disposed at a predetermined location within the fuel rod jacket (40) is a leakage detector mass (50) which is capable of having detectable eddy currents induced therein through the application of an electromagnetic field, and which mass degeneratively reacts with the fuel rod coolant to detectably reduce the eddy current producing capability of the detector mass. The method of determining the leakage status of the fuel rod cladding comprises applying an electromagnetic field by means of an electric coil (72a) placed adjacent the fuel rod in operative proximity to the detector mass, and sensing the level of the eddy currents induced in the detector mass upon excitation of the coil. |
