PURPOSE:To prevent erroneous detection due to satinizing or the like by applying a transparent or semitransparent material, which has characteristics equal to or approximating those of the refractive index of a bottle to be examined, to the surface of the bottle to perform examination in the method where the image due to transmission rays is converted photoelectrically and is detected to perform examination. CONSTITUTION:A bottle 2 to be examined which is transported on a conveyor 1 is moved to a carrying device 3 for examination, and the transparent or semitransparent material which has a refractive index equal to or approximating refractive index 1.4-1.6 of glass, for example, an alcohol such as a glycerol, a mixture of alcohols, a mixture of alcohols and water, a gelatin, its aqueous solution, a gel solution of polysaccharide, or the like is applied to the bottom of the bottle by a spray applying device 4. The bottle is examined by a photoelectric detector consisting of a light source 5 and a CCD camera 6, and it is removed if it is defective, and it is transported to a conveyor 7.
