PURPOSE:To obtain modified metal oxide with good working conditions without impairing heat resistance, etc. by mixing specified carbide with metal oxide of groups III, IV, V, IIb of the Periodic Table, or transition metal and heating in nonoxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:Metal oxide (e.g. TiO2, Sb3O3) of a metal selected from the groups III, IV, V, IIb of the Periodic Table and transition metals is mixed with carbide (e.g. SiC, TiC) expressed by the general formula: C(M)z (wherein M is an element except C and is selected from the groups III, IV, and V of the Periodic Table; z is the atomic valency of M). By heating the mixture in nonoxidizing atmosphere, metal oxide modified in the color tone or modified to have increased conductivity is obtd. Preferred proportion of the metal oxide to the carbide is that the number of the carbon atom contained in the carbide is ca. 0.01-10 times of the number of oxygen atom contained in the metal oxide excluding the water of crystallization.
