PURPOSE:To increase the performance of a lead storage battery by improving the flow of electrolyte between the positive and the negative electrode by causing each mat body to be penetrated by the convex areas of a synthetic resin base body before they are squashed so as to fix the mat body to the plate body. CONSTITUTION:Concave and convex areas 9 are formed on the front and the back surfaces of a synthetic resin base body 8 to be combined with a positive base body 1. After the base bodies 1 and 8 are combined together to form an electrode body 3', a pasty active material 4 is packed into the spaces of the electrode body 3' thereby making a plate body 5. Next, a mat body 6 is placed over the active material 4 packed in the electrode body 3' so that the mat body 6 is penetrated by the convex areas 9 of the base body 8, thereby protruding the convex areas 9 from the surface of the mat body 6. After that, when plate bodies 5 having concave and convex areas 9 are brought into pressure contact with each other, the convex areas 9 protruding above mat bodies 6 are bent and the plate bodies 5 are pressed. At the same time, the mat bodies 6 are fixed to base bodies 8 to form rivet-like pressure contact areas 10. It is also possible to bring the mat bodies 6 into close contact with surfaces in which the active material 4 is packed. By the means mentioned above, it is possible to improve the flow of electrolyte between the positive and the negative electrodes and to increase the performance of the battery. |
