PURPOSE:To accelerate recognition processing by deciding a total sum of the distance from the features of an input character and those of each standard character to be used as a prospective character, and recognizing a standard character whose distance total sum becomes the minimum value as an input character. CONSTITUTION:In an character inputted from an input device 1, a coordinate of each pen point is converted so that a barycentre of the input character in a pretreatment part 2 will become an origin. Moreover the number of strokes of the input character is detected, and when a starting point, an end point and an inflection point exist, the inflection point is extracted as a characteristic point. Accordingly, in a stroke of almost a straight line, two points of the starting point and the end point are extracted as the characteristic point, and in a stroke with bending, three points of the starting point, the inflection point and the end point are extracted as the characteristic point. An inter-pattern distance calculation part 4 calculates a distance between patterns, and the minimum distance is detected 5 from the calculated inter-pattern distance, which is outputted from an output terminal 6.
