PURPOSE:To decide whether a line figure or a character by processing the variation of an underfine flag of a label code of a lattice point obtained by the 1st scanning for a line segment followed by an end point, and repeating the 2nd scanning in the reverse direction. CONSTITUTION:An logical opertion circuit drawing 1 is image-picked up in an input part 2, and accumulated in a picture memory 4 through an A/D conversion part 3. A label code generation part 5 processes picture data and generates a lattice point label code. A recognition part 7 processes the code and recognizes a symbol, etc. When an undifined flag is set in the lattice point lable code, there is possility of a display of characters in the periphery. Therefore the recognition part 7 scans data of a code memory 6, and separation-recognizes a line segment and a character. Since an erroneous recognition may occur, separation recognition of a line segment and a character is executed twice and scanning is carried out in the regular and reverse directions. Thus a line segment and a character in the logical operation circuit drawing are properly separated and extracted, and the drawing can be automatically recognized.
