Hoy combustible gas contg. Co are produced in a chamber with walls having refractory linings (20,21,23) using pulverised coal as carbonaceous solid fuel which is introduced (29,27) with the aid of a carrier gas in the lower part (raceway 30) of the chamber. The ash is discharged as liq. slag and the combustible gas is filtered (31) within the chamber before leaving (24) the chamber. The lining consists of carbon (blocks) whilst the filter bed consists of pieces of coke and is maintained by supply (25) from above. The pulverised coal (29) is injected (27) together with hot oxygen-containing gas (28), and pref. mixed with an appropriate amt. of CaCO3 or CaO to bind sulphur for discharge with the slag.
